A general question but I wonder if people are being offered splints at the start of their illness still? I had working splints and night resting ones when I was first ill. I cannot manage to wear them now they hurt too much... I find the odema gloves handy still and the working splints (without the metal bar) Do you have splints? Are they keen on giving you them? Jenni PS I have a guilty secret- a DRAWER of gadgets and splints.... A whole DRAWER full... oooh I loathe them- they ar HID-E-OUS....!!! how to be a velvet bulldoser

I have 2 sets of splints given to me by the OT. One set is for night time and is supposed to help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The others are for day time use and they are brilliant, providing much needed support in my wrists. I can do so much more with less pain when I am wearing them. I was only diagnosed in August of this year and had the splints made in October. so yes at least in my case Jenni this is still current wisdom. The OT said my wrist movement was 'clicky' so maybe this was why she recommended them for me. Naomi x

Hello Jennie
I asked to see the OT and was then given night (which I rarely use as uncomfortable) and day time ones. I do find these very good and do certainly help.
Hope you coming on ok

I'm with you with the full set I think Jenni - night time (like a Tellytubby mitt!), soft wrist and full wrist with metal inserts, plus my favourites, the elastic gloves. I swear I hear my hands sigh and feel them smile when I put these on!!

i have day and night ones as well and i cant use the nights,i do use them for an hour before bed if i need to, i bought myself funky coloured fingerless mesh gloves from claires accessories to cover my day splints and i dont get a second look from any one,i have asked o/t for funky ones but i get the lovely royal blue everytime,i have no limit on how many times i need them renewed so guess they are still dishing them out for first timers.

Dorothy, better than the surgical flesh ones i was given i now order navy one on line, our O.T have been told not to give splints out unless they are looking really disgusting, and like has been said they are so sweaty that they need washing daily, which wears them out so quick.
I do hate wearing them in bed, but the pins and needles drive me mad, well madder. lol Anne-m xxx

Hi Jenni my night splint cracked a few months ago. I was given pressure/elastic gloves instead to wear at night or when my hands are aching. The ot said they stop the fingers curling up in the night. They are very comfortable and much easier to wear than the old night splint.

I too have day splints, flesh coloured and navy blue, thumb splints that are more like thumbscrews and night time ones that are like trying to sleep with your hands in a vice. I would defy anyone to get a proper night's sleep in those. Fortunately haven't needed them since but I feel sorry for any of you that have. They are a nightmare.

I got the attractive flesh coloured ones when first diagnosed but not night ones. I find these days that my hands get stiff and painful at night. I like the sound of the gloves though. I find that Boots own neoprene wrist supports help during the day-, particuarly if it's cold and damp like today was.I havent actually been told to use them, just decide to myself. but they don't seem to be doing any harm.

Jenni
I have never been offered splints but at my last appointment I asked for something to help my wrists as I type most of the day and I am in a lot of pain despite a gel wrist support. I was given a very sexy (not) looking pair with a metal bar and told to see how I get on. IMPOSSIBLE to type with them on, so back to pain in wrists.

I was given night time splints when I was first diagnosed to help with carpal tunnel. I've never been offered day time ones, I did mention it at an appointment, but nothing came of it. We have an O T coming to the house now as my husband needs a walk in shower and we have had rails put up outside the house to help with steps etc and lever taps. I would love something to wear during the day as my wrists do hurt, maybe the Boots neoprene wrist ones will be a good idea then!! BARBARA
